Assessing the Quality of University Education from the Student Voices
Lilan Chen; Tatsuo Kawashima
Assessment Update, v37 n2 p4-5, 15 2025
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a crucial role in human capacity building and knowledge creation regardless of countries, which significantly contribute to the development of a peaceful, stable, independent, and self-sustaining society. Consequently, stakeholders in higher education have advocated for the establishment of Quality Assurance (QA) systems to meet their expectations of educational quality. Japan is no exception in this regard. In terms of external assessments, the approval of QA in existing universities aims to protect students' right to study and ensure that each university meets the standards required to award internationally recognized academic degrees. In addition, certified evaluation and accreditation systems have been developed to enhance the education and research of universities and other HEIs, as well as to demonstrate their performance to society through periodic third-party evaluations. In response to the need to ensure quality in higher education systems, institutions are now also required to establish autonomous internal QA systems. Self-assessment refers to the processes through which HEIs implement systems, mechanisms, and policies to ensure they meet their commitments and provide education that meets quality standards. This systematic evaluation allows universities and HEIs to monitor progress, identify areas of excellence or needed improvement, and enhance their activities based on published assessment results. At The University of Osaka, self-inspection and assessment are conducted annually according to their specific goals and objectives.
