A factor analysis of the questionnaire was done using the responses of 1192 sixth and seventh grade students. The interpretation of the factors focused on the specificity of the achievement task presented and whether or not success or failure had been communicated to the person by a named external authority. Two experiments were performed to examine the process of attributional thinking in Black and White children who differed in social class. Blacks did not display a less adaptive attributional pattern than did whites following actual performance on exams, and no differences existed in children's understanding of the meaning of causes.
