Sexual attitudes and behaviors of a representative sample of single students at a California college were surveyed in spring 1972. Eighty-three percent of the males and 72 percent of the females reported premarital intercourse. This behavior is discussed in terms of its interpersonal context and the students' sexual attitudes. A sample of 200 men and women matching the characteristics of the married U.S. population for age, income, education, and race was administered a 101-item questionnaire assessing the full range of their sexual activities with their mates.
