Virginia Clinton-Lisell; Sarah E. Carlson; Heather Ness-Maddox; Amanda Dahl; Terrill Taylor; Mark L. Davison; Ben Seipel – Journal of College Reading and Learning, 2024
The purpose of this study was to examine clusters of less-skilled college readers. College students with below average reading comprehension skills (N = 77) read and thought aloud about four texts, recalled the texts, and completed standardized assessments of reading skills. Based on the findings of cluster analyses of the cognitive processes…

Kang, Hyeonah; Kweon, Soo-Ok; Choi, Sungmook – Language Teaching Research, 2022
This study employs eye-tracking to investigate how first (L1) and second language (L2) glosses affect lexical uptake and reading behaviors in L2 learners of English. The study also explores the relationship between lexical uptake and reading behaviors as a function of gloss type. To investigate this, 81 Korean university students were asked to…

Kotzer, Maddie; Kirby, John R.; Heggie, Lindsay – Reading Psychology, 2021
We investigated the contribution of morphological awareness to university students' reading comprehension ability. Although there is considerable evidence that morphological awareness contributes to children's reading ability, there is much less evidence concerning adults; the few studies of adults have not controlled other known predictors of…

Veldre, Aaron; Andrews, Sally – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2015
The boundary paradigm was used to investigate individual differences in the extraction of lexical information from the parafovea in sentence reading. The preview of a target word was manipulated so that it was identical (e.g., "sped"), a higher frequency orthographic neighbor ("seed"), a nonword neighbor ("sted"), or…

Choi, Sungmook – Language Teaching Research, 2017
Research to date suggests that textual enhancement may positively affect the learning of multiword combinations known as collocations, but may impair recall of unenhanced text. However, the attentional mechanisms underlying such effects remain unclear. In this study, 38 undergraduate students were divided into two groups: one read a text…

Massaro, Dominic W.; Taylor, Glen A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
A perceptual-recognition task was used to assess whether utilization of orthographic structure in letter recognition varies with reading ability. Good and poor college readers showed equally large effects of orthographic structure on task accuracy, whereas poor sixth-grade readers did not. (Author/GK)

Tobias, Sigmund – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1987
Students were randomly assigned to read a text passage displayed on microcomputers in one of four conditions: (1) required reviewing of main; or (2) alternate text when responses to adjunct questions were incorrect; (3) reading with adjunct questions; and (4) reading without adjunct questions. (Author/LMO)

Mason, Mildred; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
Highly skilled and less skilled readers read words and numbers aloud as rapidly as possible. Less skilled readers were slower and less accurate on both tasks showing that the need to encode and process order information may be related to reading disabilities. This hypothesis was tested by using paired-associate learning. (Author/RD)
