Fisher, Dennis F. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
The articles in this section describe research on reading in areas of visual persistence, letter identification, letter probability, word superiority effect, proofreader errors and order effects. This review challenges fellow basic researchers to become more aware of the components of reading before adding new data purporting to delineate the…

Pollatsek, Alexander; Reichle, Erik D.; Rayner, Keith – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2006
A. W. Inhoff, R. Radach, and B. Eiter (see EJ750907) argue that the current version of the E-Z Reader model (A. Pollatsek, E. D. Reichle, & K. Rayner, see EJ750906) cannot explain 2 key findings in their data, and as a result, the assumption of words being attended to 1 at a time is likely to be false. In this rejoinder, the authors argue that…

Drieghe, Denis; Rayner, Keith; Pollatsek, Alexander – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2005
The authors examined word skipping in reading in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, skipping rates were higher for a preview of a predictable word than for a visually similar nonword, indicating there is full recognition in parafoveal vision. In Experiment 2, foveal load was manipulated by varying the frequency of the word preceding either a 3-letter…

Carr, Thomas H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
Three classes of research on reading are identified. The articles of this section pertain to investigation of the organization and operation of basic processing mechanisms underlying skilled reading; each is described briefly and commented upon. Particular attention is devoted to the articles on context effects. (Author/RD)

Pollatsek, Alexander; Rayner, Keith – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1982
The functions of spaces between words in adult reading of text were investigated in three experiments. Results were consistent with a two-process theory in which filling parafoveal spaces disrupts guidance of the next eye movement and filling foveal spaces disrupts processing of the fixated word as well.
