Housing Instability's Toll on Students: Insights from Kalamazoo Public Schools District Renters

Safe, stable, and affordable housing is important for families and has positive impacts on children's health, development, and school performance. Housing in childhood can also shape future economic well-being by diminishing cognitive capacity and adaptability. Environmental contaminants from unsafe housing, like lead and mold exposure, are associated with lower academic achievement. Living in unsafe neighborhoods can have an adverse effect on reading and math scores. As part of its 2022 Kalamazoo County Housing survey, the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research sought to understand Kalamazoo's housing landscape. The survey aimed to document the characteristics and preferences of Kalamazoo County residents. Survey questions focused on demand for specific housing types, location preferences, housing challenges, getting feedback on housing priorities, and determining how different demographic groups in the county have fared in terms of housing. The results also informed the design of the Kalamazoo County Housing Plan. The key takeaway of the survey was that renters with children in the Kalamazoo Public Schools district report facing several housing challenges, including environmental hazards, affordability, and experiences with being unhoused. Emerging evidence suggests these difficulties may impact educational outcomes.
