Right-Sizing the Registrar's Office
Michael Moore; David Clingenpeel
College and University, v99 n2 p73-78 2024
Wake Forest University (WFU) is in the midst of a 28-month student information system (SIS) transition. The authors' offices are deeply involved in this process on a daily basis. As the university collects and analyzes data, discusses operational needs with campus colleagues, builds and configures tenants, tests and validates, and implements a new SIS, the home offices still have to respond to the ongoing needs of those it currently serves: students, faculty, and staff. During an informal conversation, both authors mentioned managing the increased workload associated with this implementation and stated how nice it would be to have just one more person in the office to help ease the workload. But, was one more person enough? Did one of the offices need to hire more than one individual to be considered "fully staffed?" This inquiry for a short-term solution led to a bigger question with a more long-term approach: What is the right number of staff members for a registrar's office to meet the needs of the institution it serves? Perhaps other institutions have already determined the magic number of staff members needed to optimize an efficient operation? These questions became the catalyst for the authors' research to best determine what exactly is the right size for a registrar's office.
