Blai, Boris, Jr. – 1974
An easy-to-use plan that offers the accuracy and objectivity of statistics without the complexities is described. The plan is an adaptation of a general statistical procedure called the Median Test. The 10-step computation of the Median Test is given. An appendix discusses the "median." (DB)

Hoggatt, Ralph S.; Hazel, Joe T. – 1970
This study investigated two approaches for obtaining job ratings in order to determine which procedure provided the most stable ratings, given a constant number of raters. Specifically, it compared reliability estimates determined by averaging across individually obtained job ratings and reliability estimates based on consensus ratings from…

Hershey, Marjorie Randon; Hill, David B. – Social Science Quarterly, 1976
This research tests for positional response set (the tendency when answering survey questions to choose answers in a particular position among the options presented) among students in grades 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. (Author/RM)

Slaughter, M. H.; And Others – Research Quarterly, 1977
The Heath and Carter approach to determining somatotypes is less accurate than is regression analysis, mainly because of the lack of association between skeletal widths and lean body mass as measured by body density and whole-body fat percentage, holding constant muscle circumference. (Author)

Vander Linden, Wim J.; Mellenbergh, Gideon J. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1978
A general coefficient for tests, delta, is derived from a decision theoretic point of view. The situations are considered in which a true score is estimated by a function of the observed score, observed scores are split into more than two categories, and observed scores are split into only two categories. Crehan, Kevin D.; And Others – Educational Research Quarterly, 1978
Longitudinal studies of test wiseness (TW) investigated: (1) the relationship between TW and grade level; (2) the relationship between TW and sex; and (3) the stability of TW. Results indicated that TW was somewhat stable over the intervals observed. No sex effects and no sex by year interactions were found. (Author/GD C)

McQuitty, Louis L.; Koch, Valerie L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
A relatively reliable and valid hierarchy of clusters of objects is plotted from the highest column entries, exclusively, of a matrix of interassociations between the objects. Having developed out of a loose definition of types, the method isolates both loose and highly definitive types, and all those in between. (Author/RC)

Condry, John; Dyer, Sharon – Journal of Social Issues, 1976
Theory and research on the psychological construct of fear of success is reviewed in the context of Horner's original (1968) formulation of the motive. Both the validity and the reliability of the original measure are questioned in the light of the weakness of empirical support. (Author/AM)

Hammersley, Martyn – British Educational Research Journal, 1987
Notes that problems of measurement in educational research are often addressed by using the terms validity and reliability. Discusses the meaning given to these terms and how they relate to the aims of the measurement process in educational research. (RKM)

Viitasalo, Jukka T. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1988
The reliability of new electrical measurements of vertical jumping height and of throwing velocity was tested. These results were compared to traditional measurement techniques. The new method was found to give reliable results from children to adults. Methodology is discussed. (Author/JL)

Burgoon, Judee K.; Hale, Jerold L. – Communication Monographs, 1987
Reports three studies designed to (1) validate the conceptualization of relational communication advanced by J. K. Burgoon and J. L. Hale, which identifies 12 conceptually distinct but interrelated message themes central to defining interpersonal relationships, and (2) produce a reliable measurement instrument. Presents reliability and validity…

Roy, Leena; Sawyers, Janet K. – Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, 1986
Conducted an empirical study of communications in a mother-child context, studied cognitive, emotional, and metacommunicational responses to "subtle inconsistencies" and consistencies in communication in this context. Found subtle inconsistency to be more stressful, complex, and evocative of responses showing lack of metacommunication, than…

Huberty, Carl J.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1986
Three methods of transforming unordered categorical response variables are described: (1) analysis using dummy variables; (2) eigenanalysis of frequency patterns scaled relative to within-groups variance; (3) categorical variables analyzed separately with scale values generated so that the grouping variable and the categorical variable are…

Dupuis, Claude – Human Development, 1984
Discusses the conditions for validating customary phylogenetic procedures. Concludes that the requisites of homogeneity and completeness for proved short lineages seem satisfied by the Hennigian but not the Haeckelian procedure. The epistemological antinomy of the two procedures is emphasized for the first time. (Author/RH)

Watson, Charles G.; Pucel, John – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1985
Using a sample of 98 alcoholics, studied intercorrelations between control-over-drinking ratings made in 10 follow-ups covering the first 18 months after treatment. Control among treated alcoholics was generally inconsistent and only marginally predictable. Recidivism increased up to 9th-month follow-up, then it stablized and seemed to decline…
