Examined the validity of averaged ratings of judges who rated a patient's mood from speech samples taken at different times during psychotherapy. Ratings were averaged and correlated with an objective measure of anxiety based upon the patient's speech disruptions. Correlations increased as the number of judges increased. (Author)

The relationship between scores on objective tests of language skills and on free writing tasks was analyzed for third and eighth graders. Correlations between scores were of the same magnitude as reported for college students. Differences in relationships between free-writing performance and objective test scores are discussed. Use of choice-weighted scores as a basis for assigning grades in college courses was investigated. Reliability and validity indices offer little to recommend either type of choice-weighted scoring over number-right scoring.
