Peer reviewedFisicaro, Sebastiano A.; Lautenschlager, Gary J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
An equation derived by W. A. Nicewander and J. M. Price relating statistical power to reliability of dependent variable measures when true score regression is homogeneous across treatment conditions is enhanced through overcoming the problem of directly estimating the squared linear correlation between true scores for X and Y. (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedvan Buuren, Stef; van Rijckevorsel, Jan L. A. – Psychometrika, 1992
A technique is presented to transform incomplete categorical data into complete data by imputing appropriate scores into missing cells. A solution of the optimization problem is suggested, and relevant psychometric theory is discussed. The average correlation should be at least 0.50 before the method becomes practical. (SLD)
Descriptors: Classification, Computer Simulation, Correlation, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedHenriksen, Melvin, Ed.; Wagon, Stan, Ed. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1991
The discrete mathematics topics of trees and computational complexity are implemented in a simple reliability program which illustrates the process advantages of the PASCAL programing language. The discussion focuses on the impact that reliability research can provide in assessment of the risks found in complex technological ventures. (Author/JJK)
Descriptors: Algorithms, College Mathematics, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedCrone, Linda J.; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1994
Scores from 324 Louisiana schools on the Louisiana Graduation Exit Examination and a within-school split sample of 255 schools indicate that a single subject or grade provides a less consistent and more narrow perspective on school effectiveness than a subcomposite made up of 2 subject areas. (SLD)
Descriptors: Classification, Effective Schools Research, Elementary Secondary Education, Exit Examinations
Peer reviewedSlate, John R. – Psychology in the Schools, 1994
Investigated correlations between two intelligence measures for exceptional children. Corrected correlations between the tests indicated differences with correlations reported in one manual. Relationships were generally higher than those reported elsewhere. Implications are discussed, especially those involving the use of correlations between…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Children, Correlation, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedDoll, Beth; Elliott, Stephen N. – Journal of Early Intervention, 1994
Nine comprehensive observations were conducted of 24 preschoolers (8 with disabilities) in free play settings, with social behavior categories based on the work of Strain. Comparison of partial and complete observational records demonstrated that at least five observations were required to represent the children's social behavior adequately.…

Peer reviewedCooil, Bruce; Rust, Roland T. – Psychometrika, 1994
It is proposed that proportional reduction in loss (PRL) be used as a theoretical basis to derive, justify, and interpret reliability measures to gauge reliability on a zero-to-one scale. This PRL approach simplifies the interpretation of existing measures (e.g., generalizability-theory measures). (SLD)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Generalizability Theory
Peer reviewedMarsh, Herbert W.; Roche, Lawrence A. – Australian Journal of Education, 1992
In five studies, the applicability of two North American instruments for student evaluation of teacher performance was assessed at the University of Western Sydney (Macarthur, Australia). Results of a multitrait-multimethod analysis indicate the instruments are applicable at this institution and across diverse educational settings. (Author/MSE)

Peer reviewedFletcher, Jack M.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1991
For successful classification of children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, major issues include (1) the need for explicit studies of identification criteria; (2) the need for systematic sampling strategies; (3) development of hypothetical classifications; and (4) systematic assessment of reliability and validity of hypothetical…
Descriptors: Attention Deficit Disorders, Classification, Elementary Secondary Education, Handicap Identification
Rolfe, John – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1991
Discusses the need to evaluate the effectiveness of games and simulations that are used for training and educational purposes. Evaluation criteria are described, including validity, reliability, and utility; methods of measuring training device effectiveness are explained; and problems encountered with evaluations are discussed. (30 references)…
Descriptors: Educational Games, Evaluation Criteria, Evaluation Needs, Evaluation Problems
Peer reviewedZhi-Cheng, Dong; Collis, Betty – Journal of Educational Technology Systems, 1994
Discusses the portability of a Canadian-made educational simulation software package, "The Electronics Workbench," to China that was part of a larger study conducted at the University of Twente (The Netherlands). Evaluation results of the software use in China are presented, including functionality for electronics education, ease of use,…

Peer reviewedShapley, Kelly S.; Bush, M. Joan – Applied Measurement in Education, 1999
Examined the validity and reliability of the 1995-96 reading/language arts portfolio assessment developed in the Dallas (Texas) public schools for prekindergarten through second grade. Ratings by 42 teachers show that portfolio contents do not provide a valid sample of student work and the assessment reliability is low. (SLD)
Descriptors: Language Arts, Portfolio Assessment, Portfolios (Background Materials), Primary Education
Peer reviewedHagborg, Winston J. – Adolescence, 1998
Examines the psychometric properties of Psychological Sense of School Membership-Brief Questionnaire (PSSM-Brief). Middle school students (N=120) completed the PSSM-Brief. Results show high internal consistency and validity. Results were consistent with prior research pertaining to the PSSM. (Author/MKA)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Locus of Control, Middle School Students, Middle Schools
Peer reviewedShiveley, James M.; VanFossen, Philip J. – Social Studies, 1999
Argues that social studies teachers should offer their students the necessary critical-thinking skills to help them navigate the Internet. Presents an overview of six criteria, with accompanying questions, to assist students in determining the reliability and usefulness of information sites and allowing them access to the valuable information…
Descriptors: Content Analysis, Critical Thinking, Information Literacy, Information Skills
Peer reviewedColeman, Donald G.; Adams, R. C. – Journal of Personnel Evaluation in Education, 1999
Examined the validity and reliability of the Professional Development Inventory, an instrument used in assessment centers of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Results support the ease of use and high degree of validity and reliability of the instrument. (SLD)
Descriptors: Assessment Centers (Personnel), Construct Validity, Elementary Education, Evaluation Methods
