Equipping a Select Group of College Students from Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Birmingham, Al to Increase Great Commission Awareness and Participation
Benjamin M. Baber
ProQuest LLC, D.Min. Dissertation, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
The project director sought to equip a select group of college students from Shades Mountain Baptist Church (SMBC) in Birmingham, AL to increase their Great Commission awareness and participation. The project director addressed a very significant need in his ministry context. He helped college students meaningfully connect their desire for purpose with the biblical mandate to participate in the Great Commission. The project director developed a biblical and theological foundation for the need to participate in the Great Commission. He also developed a ministry foundation for how to equip college students to become more aware of their need to understand and participate in the Great Commission. The ministry foundation included a historical survey of the importance of equipping college students, research on key models and strategies for equipping students to participate in the Great Commission, an identification of core areas for development, and the types of formation needed in order to best equip students. The research the project director gained through the biblical, theological, and ministry foundation was the basis for creating a ten-week summer training program for college students. The project director used the equipping program to train eleven college students to increase their Great Commission awareness and participation. The training was very intensive and required a high level of commitment from each participant. The project director employed a pre- and post-test tool to evaluate the success of the program in achieving the desired results. Based on the project director's analysis, the summer training program was successful in achieving the project objectives. As a result, the project director and the college ministry of SMBC greatly benefitted because college students better understood Jesus's final words to his disciples. The college students will now have a greater appreciation in helping their generation be a part of fulfilling the Great Commission.
