Proxemics and Kinesics of Adolescents in Dual-Gender Groups
Terneus, Sandra K.; Malone, Yvonne
Guidance & Counselling, v19 n3 p118-123 Spr 2004
Ethological research indicates that during courtship, men and women usually communicate their interests via body language and interpersonal space (kinesics and proxemics). Many studies have validated the usage of kinesics and the ebb and flow of proximity during the process of courtship. Although the majority of studies have focused on young adults, few have focused on adolescence, when the developmental stage of courtship begins (Leaper, 1994; Moore, 1995). Although Moore's study examined adolescents at school-related functions, the intermittent contact of adolescents during off-campus events may provide information useful in charting interpersonal development. This article reports the findings of the proxemic and kinesic patterns of adolescents in dual-gender groups; specifically, non-verbal behaviours and those that cued invasion of personal space resulting in group disbandment.
