Volunteer clients of both sexes were assigned randomly to one of three male counselors and to one of two treatments. In the nonstandard English condition, the counselor casually and passively introduced four profane words. Counselors who used nonstandard English were judged to be less effective and satisfying. A sample of 40 college subjects were asked to rate counselor warmth and empathy after viewing videosegments of non-verbal body language. Arm and leg positions significantly affected the ratings of counselor warmth and empathy. The arms-crossed position was the least empathic position. (Author)

This study investigated questions raised by previous research by Barak and LaCrosse regarding perceptions of counselor behavior. Different groups of subjects viewed interviews and rated them on 36 bipolar items (Counselor Rating Form). This study was conducted on the Counselor Evaluation Rating Scale (CERS). Ratings on 404 students from approximately 35 different supervisors were factor-analyzed using an oblique solution with rotation to simple loadings.
