The formation of Pearl City, a Black community in Florida, is examined in the context of Black migration at the turn of the century. The history of this community is presented. Institutions such as the church and the family increased solidarity, cohesiveness, and adaptation as Blacks immigrated to Pearl City. (VM)

Presents a measure of racial residential segregation which conforms to the traditional attributes of segregation indices, but includes sensitivity to the spatial patterns of White and non-White residence in a city. Reviews earlier measures, describes the new one, and applies it to racial housing patterns in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1890. (KH)

Few books have been written and little information is known about Black populations of the southern Appalachian mountains. This article describes the cultural and settlement patterns of these people and traces their historical development. Occupational changes and the effects of urbanization are presented. (VM)
