Solutions to Burnout of Youth Care Workers: A Phenomenological Study

This qualitative phenomenological study explored solutions to the burnout of youth care workers. The researcher provided voices to the experiences of those working directly with youth in children's residential facilities. Understanding the perspectives of the youth care workers enabled their lived experiences to be captured, leading to the emergence of solutions for mitigating burnout. The 13 perceived solutions found in this study were as follows: debriefing, support, recognition, increased resources, professionalism, help with youth, separate work, provision of burnout prevention awareness, training, team building, cultural diversity, schedules, and physical environmental space. The 13 solutions provided a framework for establishing a model called the Youth Care Worker Burnout Prevention Model. The findings of this study provide insights into the challenges and impact of the burnout experienced by personnel working directly with youth at children's residential facilities. They also provide an understanding of solutions that could mitigate the burnout of these workers, leading to higher quality services for residential youth.
