Tunson, Je'na; Candler, Catherine – Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics, 2010
The purpose of this study was to examine the behavioral states of individual children for evidence of responsiveness within and without a multisensory environment (MSE). Three children in the age range of 3-10 years with severe multiple disabilities participated in the study. A single-system ABAB design was used. Participants' behavioral states,…

Anderson, Britt – Intelligence, 1995
The dendritic structure of layer II-III pyramidal neurons of the parietal cortex in 41 Long-Evans rats was compared to behavioral assessments of attention to novelty, response flexibility, and reasoning. A significant correlation between dendritic arborization and behavioral performance was not demonstrated. (SLD)

Guess, Doug; Siegel-Causey, Douglas – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1995
Behavior states were observed in 66 subjects (ages 1-21) with profound disabilities, and data were analyzed as percentage of time subjects spent in various states, influence of environmental variables, and evidence of nonlinear state transitions. Findings suggest complex behavioral processes in the levels of alertness and responsiveness associated…

Peterson, Rita W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studied the effect of the presence of an adult on the responses of a racially mixed group of elementary school children to curiosity-arousing objects. Results showed that the children exhibited more curiosity when they were left alone. A significant interaction was also found for age x sex x race. (MLH)

Kumar, Krishna; Farley, Frank H. – 1971
This study examines the effects on long-term retention of variations in intensity and temporal parameters of arousal following a single learning trial in a paired-associate task. Intensity of arousal was manipulated by using two levels of noise, 75 db. and 90 db., and a condition without noise. Noise was delivered to the 56 female university…

Cantor, Nancy L.; And Others – Child Development, 1977
Results indicating that adult males direct more praise, verbal help, and other forms of positive attention to responsive than to unresponsive children are contrasted with results obtained in a previous study of the reactions of women subjects. (Author/JMB)

Barnette, J. Jackson – Research in the Schools, 1996
The incidence of three types of behaviors consistent with nonattending in completing surveys was studied with 1,240 elementary school students, 3,541 students in grades 5 through 12, and 2,688 teachers. While the proportion of missing items did not seem to be a problem, there is evidence of patterns that indicate nonattending behavior. (SLD)

Pallak, Suzanne Sogin – 1977
Objective self-awareness theory and stimulus incongruity theory suggest that focusing one's attention on one's behavior in an unfamiliar situation will increase the drive to evaluate oneself, which may be manifested in social comparison. Videotapes of male undergraduates conversing with hand-held puppets were used to study direction of attention…

Barnette, J. Jackson – 1995
When self-administered surveys or questionnaires are administered, there is often a question of whether respondents have attended to the items in a thoughtful manner. This paper examines the results of three different surveys to investigate the occurrence of nonattending behaviors such as missing items, patterns that indicate lack of…
