The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry research study is to examine the features that need to be improved in self-paced cybersecurity awareness training to educate retail employees to identify phishing attacks. Malicious phishing attacks are a significant threat to retail corporations' business operations and confidential data. Employees' poor computing practices are exploited by cybercriminals utilizing phishing attacks targeting the retail industry. Corporations invest in technology to protect their company information systems but fail to improve employees' security knowledge base. While corporations take a technological approach to prevent phishing attacks, empirical literature does not suggest these approaches are impactful as expected due to the phishing attacks caused by employees' computing practices. The research question that guided this research study asked one question: "What features need to be improved in self-paced cybersecurity awareness training to educate retail employees to identify phishing attacks?" The population of this research study consisted of employees of medium to large-sized retail corporations in the United States. The selected 19 participants were employees of retail corporations that were required to meet the criteria of this generic qualitative research study. The emerged themes are topics that should be included in self-paced cybersecurity awareness training, methods to improve of self-paced cybersecurity awareness training, factors that influence motivation to finish self-paced cybersecurity awareness training, and the frequency and duration of self-paced cybersecurity awareness training. Findings from this generic qualitative research study will assist security practitioners of the cybersecurity and information technology field to implement effective self-paced cybersecurity awareness training to influence employees secure computing practices to identify phishing attacks.
