However, evidence indicates a need for program refinements to address discrepancies in SLO performance by staff role and school. A separate report was published in September 2013 [ED629046].

Overall, 2011 retention rates for REACH teachers were not significantly higher than that of similar non-REACH peers in Austin Independent School District (AISD). However, data suggest that the intensive mentoring program is making a greater impact on novice teacher retention each year.

This project combines qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive examination of mentoring practice in an attempt to understand the ways in which mentoring leads to positive outcomes for beginning teachers and their students in AISD during 2010-2011.

Feedback was obtained on 683 teachers at 12 AISD schools from 9,000 pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students. Students' ratings were generally favorable and correlated with some observation-based ratings. Implications for policy are addressed.
