A study of physician migration out of the medical school's state showed that a state's ability to retain graduates to practice there is related to physician and state characteristics. The traditional assumption that state aid to medical schools helps provide physicians for the state may be less compelling today. (Author/MSE)

Physicians' decisions on where to locate after they completed their training were examined by determining where a state's practicing physicians came from and whether physicians who are trained in a state practice in that state. An evaluation instrument was used at the University of Washington and several affiliated schools to examine the differential effects of similar training in medical interviewing on students taught at different locations. The results indicate that similar training at different locations resulted in substantially identical posttest scores. (JMD)

The association of rural or urban background with choice of medical practice location was investigated in two time periods, 1950-1955 and 1963-1968, using the alumni of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
