Schmidt, Jennifer A.; Rosenberg, Joshua M.; Beymer, Patrick N. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2018
Science education reform efforts in the Unites States call for a dramatic shift in the way students are expected to engage with scientific concepts, core ideas, and practices in the classroom. This new vision of science learning demands a more complex conceptual understanding of student engagement and research models that capture both the…

Yacoubian, Hagop A.; BouJaoude, Saouma – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2010
This research investigated the effect of reflective discussions following inquiry-based laboratory activities on students' views of the tentative, empirical, subjective, and social aspects of nature of science (NOS). Thirty-eight grade six students from a Lebanese school participated in the study. The study used a pretest-posttest control-group…

Hsu, Pei-Ling; Roth, Wolff-Michael; Mazumder, Asit – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2009
Many science educators encourage student experiences of "authentic" science by means of student participation in science-related workplaces. Little research has been done, however, to investigate how "teaching" naturally occurs in such settings, where scientists or technicians normally do not have pedagogical training and generally do not have…

Friedler, Yael; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
The impact of enhanced observation or enhanced prediction on scientific reasoning about heat energy and temperature problems was investigated. Instruction was successful in improving prediction and observation skills in the microcomputer-based laboratory environment. (CW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Computer Interfaces, Computer Uses in Education, Elementary Secondary Education

Butler, Malcolm B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1999
Reports on a study of elementary and middle school students' (n=254) intentions to perform science learning activities. Finds that students value different sources of information and support relative to their intention to engage in science learning activities. Contains 40 references. (Author/WRM)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Laboratory Experiments, Middle Schools, Science Activities

Germann, Paul J.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1996
Analyzes nine high school biology manuals to determine how well they promote the basic and integrated science process skills that are involved in scientific inquiry. Results indicate that the manuals seldom enable students to use their knowledge and experience to pose questions, solve problems, investigate natural phenomena, or construct answers…

Leonard, William H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
This was an experiment to test the extended discretion laboratory approach versus a guided-inquiry approach for teaching biology in a university setting. Among three criterion variables (examination, reports, and quizzes), only the laboratory report scores showed differences between groups and group-by-instructor interaction. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Inquiry, Laboratory Experiments

Ray, Brian D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
Describes an exploratory study to identify determinants of elementary student's intentions to perform laboratory and nonlaboratory science activities. Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action was used as the basis for the study. (PR)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Elementary Education, Learning Theories, Research Reports

Roth, Wolff-Michael; Roychoudhury, Anita – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
This male-specific study examined the development of integrated process skill in the context of open-inquiry laboratory sessions. Findings from this qualitative study indicate that male students develop higher-order process skills through nontraditional laboratory experiences that provided the students with freedom to perform experiments of…

Thair, Michael; Treagust, David F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1999
Examines the role of practical activities in secondary science from an international perspective and contrasts this to a developing country's perspective. Discusses research studies on training teachers to include physics practical work in Indonesia and the benefits and constraints of implementing practical work in physics classrooms. Contains 37…

Keys, Carolyn W.; Hand, Brian; Prain, Vaughn; Collins, Susan – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1999
Discusses preliminary research on a new heuristic tool for learning from laboratory activities in secondary science. Finds that use of the science writing heuristic facilitated students in generating meaning from data; making connections among procedures, data, evidence, and claims; and engaging in metacognition. (Contains 29 references.)…

Doran, Rodney L.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
Tests in each science area were developed around six laboratory tasks. Students had to plan an investigation, collect and organize data, and formulate conclusions based on calculations and graphs. Over 1,000 students from 32 Ohio schools formed the sample for this study. Data are presented by skill and by task. An analysis for gender and school…
