Phillips, Darrell G. – Science Teacher, 1976
Reviews Piaget's stages of development and describes types of educational activities which are appropriate for specific levels of cognitive development. (CP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Instructional Materials

Ostlund, Karen; Fite, Kathy – Science and Children, 1988
Describes classroom activities to help children determine cause and relate the changes to the substances being changed. Advocates the use of "change jars" and making daily observations to teach the concepts that certain conditions promote change. Includes ideas using temperature, moisture, rotting, and sprouting to teach the concept of change. (CW)
Descriptors: Change, Cognitive Development, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science

Flick, Lawrence B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
The question of how children solve force and motion problems in computer simulations without explicit knowledge of the underlying physics was investigated. Keystroke sequences made by children were saved and analyzed, and children were interviewed to understand their perception of the relationship between keyboard input and on-screen action. (CW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Computer Simulation, Computer Uses in Education, Elementary Education
Pennsylvania State Dept. of Education, Harrisburg. Div. of Arts and Sciences. – 1984
This document provides information about Science Unlimited (SU), the elementary school science effort of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. (The philosophy and characteristics of SU continue the earlier Pennsylvania science program effort entitled Investigative Science in Elementary Education.) The document includes: (1) a list of SU…

Prosser, Michael – Science Education, 1979
This study, conducted in an Australian institution, investigates the intellectual requirements of the mechanics section of a first-year college physics text. Instructional and prerequisite concepts were classified in terms of the intellectual skills required to understand them. (HM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, College Science, Content Analysis

Hoehn, Robert G. – Science Activities, 1990
Listed with examples are six levels of thinking. The design of lessons to teach higher order thinking is discussed. A sample lesson on spontaneous generation which uses this method is provided. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Cognitive Development, Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education

Friedler, Yael; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
The impact of enhanced observation or enhanced prediction on scientific reasoning about heat energy and temperature problems was investigated. Instruction was successful in improving prediction and observation skills in the microcomputer-based laboratory environment. (CW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Computer Interfaces, Computer Uses in Education, Elementary Secondary Education
Beatty, Alix – National Academies Press, 2005
The National Research Council (NRC), through the Center for Education (CFE), wishes to build on the work in early childhood it has already done. In particular, the NRC wishes to focus on research on young children and their learning of mathematical and scientific ideas. The workshop that is the subject of this report, one in a series of workshops…
