van Arnum, Susan D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A useful metrics system for the assessment of the environmental impact of chemical processes is utilized to illustrate several of the principles of green chemistry. The use of this metrics system in conjunction with laboratory experiments in green chemistry would provide for reinforcement in both the theory and practice of green chemistry.

Bilbo, Thomas E.; Milkent, Marlene M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Two instructional approaches and a control group were used in this study. Metric instruction in a college introductory physical science course was divided between: a) Approach A in which volume instruction followed that of length and area; b) Approach B in which volume was stressed but area was not introduced; and Approach C, the control (no…

Bellipanni, L. J.; Flowers, John M. – Science and Children, 1974
Suggests the use of road maps as a means of teaching children the metric system, and outlines a step-by-step procedure for transforming the scale on an ordinary road map into a metric scale. (JR)

Galindez, Peter – Science Activities, 1974
Describes how student understanding and interest in the metric system system can be stimulated by building and launching model rockets. (JR)

Smith, Susan R.; And Others – 1980
This study attempted to gather empirical evidence to guide educators in their teaching of linear measurement to primary school children. It attempted to answer the question "What modes of instruction are most effective for teaching linear measurement concepts to conservers and nonconservers of length?" (as defined by Jean Piaget), using a…

Eagles, Cheryl – Science and Children, 1994
Presents the following activities for teaching elementary students about the metric system: Metric Soda Fountain, Metric Meals, Metric Moola, and Metric Golf. (PR)

Schlenker, Richard M.; Yoshida, Sarah J. – Science Activities, 1992
Describes how students in grades 2-8 can make beakers from quart-sized oil containers and calibrate them in milliliters. In an second activity, students estimate the volume of water in four jars and use their beakers to measure the water in each. The estimates are compared to the true measurements. (PR)

Swan, Malcolm D.; Jones, Orville E. – 1973
It is essential in communicative situations for teachers and students to have comparable percepts. A paucity of information is available on the percepts held by children regarding quantities and intervals of distance, height, weight, time, temperature and volume or on improvement (if any) that occurs as children mature. Teachers cannot be…

Sampson, Sue Scott – 1977
This Unified Sciences and Mathematics for Elementary Schools (USMES) unit challenges students to find a good way to tell many people about a topic/problem (vandalism, playground safety, teaching the metric system). The challenge is general enough to apply to many problem-solving situations in mathematics, science, social science, and language arts…
