Peer reviewedKnoche, Wilhelm; Rees, Norman H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Background information, procedures, and typical results are provided for an experiment on the decomposition of murexide in acid solution. The experiment, suitable for advanced courses, can be easily performed in a 6-hour laboratory period. (JN)
Descriptors: Acids, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedAnderson, C. P.; Saner, W. A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
An experiment for determining polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) isomers is described. The very low vapor pressures of PCB's allow them to be handled safely in the laboratory. In addition, this low volatility permits their analysis by thin-layer chromatography and recovery from the developed plate with effectively no evaporative losses. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedShankland, R. S. – Physics Teacher, 1977
Discusses the historical background of the 1887 Michelson-Morley experiment to detect the earth's motion through the aether. (MLH)
Descriptors: Biographical Inventories, Instructional Materials, Physics, Relativity
Teegarden, David M. – National Science Teachers Association (NJ3), 2004
More than half of all chemists work on some aspect of polymers. For high school teachers who want to introduce polymer science basics, properties, and uses, this book is uniquely helpful--much deeper than simple monographs or collections of experiments, but much more accessible than college texts. Divided into four sections, Polymer Chemistry…
Descriptors: Science Teachers, Plastics, Chemistry, Secondary School Teachers
Penrose, Gordon – 1998
This book presents 65 simple, safe, and intriguing hands-on science activities. In doing these simple experiments, children can make a variety of discoveries that will surprise them. It includes many activities from discovering how people see color and what makes people's hair stand on end, to creating a tornado in a jar or a propeller-driven boat…

Steele, J. Dorman – A.S. Barnes & Company, 1870
This textbook is designed to aid teachers who are using the "Fourteen Weeks Course." The problems contained in all the books are solved. The book contains answers in natural philosophy, chemistry, descriptive astronomy, experiments in chemistry, human physiology, physics, and astronomy.
Descriptors: Textbooks, Science Instruction, Natural Sciences, Chemistry
Peer reviewedBalchin, A. A. – Physics Education, 1974
Discusses some aspects in X-ray topography, including formation of dislocations, characteristics of stacking faults, x-ray contrast in defect inspection, Berg-Barrett technique, and Lang traversing crystal and Borrmann's methods. (CC)
