Mayer, Larry – Journal of Geological Education, 1987
Described is the use of a microcomputer and computer software to simulate the use of geological equipment. The technique uses pictures of the control panel (with switches and dials that can be activated) and a story board that can provide the simulation. A simple seismograph is used as an example of possible simulations. (RH)

Ousey, John Russell, Jr. – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Describes how microcomputer spreadsheets are easily adapted for use in groundwater modeling. Presents spreadsheet set-ups and the results of five groundwater models. Suggests that this approach can provide a basis for demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and student projects. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Uses in Education, Higher Education

Laudon, Robert C. – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Outlines the advantages and disadvantages of using electronic spreadsheets for grade keeping. Offers suggestions for selecting a computer and software programs. Provides examples of spreadsheet printouts. (ML)

Frost, Michael J. – Journal of Geological Education, 1977
Presents a computer game which assists in learning the classification of igneous rocks and a simulation program which illustrates some aspects of igneous textures. (SL)
Descriptors: Classification, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Earth Science

McKenzie, Garry D. – Journal of Geological Education, 1984
The expanded use of microcomputers, including word processing, to improve productivity of geological educators and students is discussed. Topic areas examined include: computer development and academic use; word processing with microcomputers; instructional uses and other applications; impacts on academia; and acquisition. (BC)

Diemer, John Andrew; And Others – Journal of Geological Education, 1989
Describes a computer program which represents the first merger of an expert system and imaging technology into a tool to assist in learning mineral identification. Presents a discussion of the system's development, evaluation of effectiveness, and future modifications. (RT)

Burger, H. Robert – Journal of Geological Education, 1983
Provides list of mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry computer programs. Each entry includes a brief description, program name and language, availability of program listing, and source and/or reference. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Programs, Crystallography

Garlick, G. Donald; Garlick, Benjamin J. – Journal of Geological Education, 1987
Discusses the need to take into account the effects of arrested fractional crystallization in the petrographic classification of volcanic rocks containing plagioclase phenocrysts. Describes the development and use of a computer program to accomplish this task graphically. (TW)
Descriptors: Classification, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics

Barker, Gary Keith – Journal of Geological Education, 1987
Provides directions for interfacing the Lehman seismograph through an analog/digital converter. Discusses potential modifications and applications of this approach. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Uses in Education, Geology

Hayes, W. B.; Allard, G. O. – Journal of Geological Education, 1981
The effectiveness of an interactive computer-based instruction program designed to give students experience with exploratory drilling is compared to a previously used field-oriented simulated exploration program. The development, operation, and implementation of the computer program are discussed. (DC)

Horton, Robert A., Jr. – Journal of Geological Education, 1994
Advocates a computer-controlled x-ray diffractometer as an inexpensive analytical tool that is easy to use and applicable to a wide range of geological problems. Both qualitative and quantitative experiments are possible. Exercises can easily be customized to local geology. Ideal for small departments with limited resources for providing hands-on…

Smith, Stephen M. – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Describes an interactive, self-prompting BASIC program that can be incorporated in introductory and intermediate hydrology courses. Exlains how the program can be used to evaluate pumping test data and also to calculate transmissivity and storativity values of confined aquifers. The program is written for the IBM PC. (ML)

McEachran, David Ballard; Marshak, Stephen – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Describes three microcomputer programs that allow geology students to deform two-dimensional images on a computer screen and then to measure changes in angular relationships. Two of the programs simulate pure and simple shear and the third simulates variations in shear strain that occur in shear zones. (ML)

Boger, Phillip David; Boger, Jane Louise – Journal of Geological Education, 1994
Discusses the use of interactive computer-assisted lab exercises that combine text, graphics, and simple animation. Students use these self-paced applications to test their level of comprehension, identify their misconceptions, and seek explanatory information. Benefits include consistency in teaching and evaluation, and the ability to link with…
