Rowe, Mary Budd – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Presents findings from research studies which suggest that changes in teaching procedures can increase survival rates in chemistry. Using 2-minute pauses in lecture and 3-second wait times in discussions, learning chemistry in context of major from which student comes, and computer applications are recommended. (JN)

Brooks, David W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Alternatives to traditional, large-class lecturing are discussed. They include using canned lectures, demonstrations and lecture experiments, computer simulations, problem-solving strategies, breaks during lectures, and movies. Moving out of large classrooms to laboratories and resource rooms (or giving an examination) is also suggested. (JN)

Evans, Robert C.; Omaha Boy, Nancy H. – Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, 1996
Reports on a two-year project in a biology course for nonmajors in which lectures were replaced with guided learning activities and weekly exams designed to help students gain the confidence to be independent learners, especially in science, assume responsibility for their own learning, improve study skills, and make more effective use of class…

Stepans, Joseph; And Others – Science Education, 1988
Compares the effectiveness of two instructional models in bringing about a valid understanding of science concepts in prospective elementary teachers. Describes the two instructional models; an expository model and a learning cycle model. Concludes that college students understandings of science concepts may be improved using a combination of the…

Yager, Robert E.; Penick, John E. – Curriculum Review, 1983
Three assessments of the status of school science discovered that textbooks frequently determine course content, the preparation science provides for next academic level is its justification, lecture method is widely used, science is a low educational priority, and students feel it is irrelevant to later life experiences.
