Brown, Alan V.; Thompson, Gregory L. – Foreign Language Annals, 2016
Using a data set exclusively prepared for and licensed to them by the College Board, the authors examined the growth of the Advanced Placement program in foreign languages and overall trends in regard to the number of candidates who sat for the foreign language exams, their gender, their scores, and their ethnicity over the 36-year period covering…

Walberg, Herbert J.; And Others – Review of Educational Research, 1984
This paper demonstrates the variety of positive-skew phenomena and discusses their theoretical, research, and practical implications in education. (PN)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Data Analysis, Research Problems, Scores

Edwards, Don; Cummings, Cynthia B. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1990
An evolved form of the Edwards and Beckworth (1989) model for probability selection for Scholastic Achievement Test takers using truncated normal distributions is presented. It is shown that the arguments of Holland and Wainer are not sufficient to reject this model. (SLD)

Feingold, Alan – Review of Educational Research, 1993
The second approach used by L. V. Hedges and L. Friedman (1993) in their reanalysis of Feingold's earlier results is conceptually equivalent and yields results consistent with the original interpretation. The first method yields results that are discrepant. Analyses of variations in tail effect sizes are planned. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Tests, Effect Size, Females, Intelligence

Hedges, Larry V.; Friedman, Lynn – Review of Educational Research, 1993
Feingold's reply illustrates that his steps in characterizing tail effect sizes are not the calculations the authors had imagined. Attempting to reproduce Feingold's calculations, the authors still often find themselves in disagreement with interpretations Feingold has placed in his table. (SLD)

Hedges, Larry V.; Friedman, Lynn – Review of Educational Research, 1993
Analyzes effect sizes in tails of distribution of scores in Feingold's study of joint effects of gender differences in mean and variability on 28 cognitive-ability scales. Effect sizes are smaller than Feingold assumed. Evaluates joint effect of gender differences by number of males and females in extreme score ranges. (SLD)

Hambleton, Ronald K. – 1995
Performance assessments in education and credentialing are becoming popular. At the same time, there do not exist any well established and validated methods for setting standards on performance assessments. This paper describes several of the new standard-setting methods that are emerging for use with performance assessments and considers their…
