A discussion of the use of films in foreign language teaching. A particular problem is the lack of readily available foreign language films without subtitles. A procedure for modification of the sixteen millimeter projector in order to obscure subtitles is described in detail. (AMH)

There is a need for expanding offerings in foreign language instruction to reach different age and interest groups, prepare teachers, and educate students for positions in business, industry, and government. An experimental university program in first-year French is described in which a self-instructional, programed text was used. Students proceeded at their own rate and were allowed repeated attempts to meet the minimal requirement of 75 percent mastery. An analysis of questionnaires on the teaching of Francophone literature in colleges and secondary schools. Most studied is the literature of West Africa, Quebec and the Antilles.
