Peelle, Howard A. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1975
Use of the computer programs provided here in APL programming language can help students understand computational algorithms. (SD)
Descriptors: Algebra, Algorithms, College Mathematics, Computer Programs

Davies, H. B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
Attention is drawn to an ancient Greek method for finding the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers. A link is established between this method and a well-known method of obtaining the highest common factor (HCF) numbers. This leads to consideration of some relationships between HCF and LCM. (Author/MK)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Mathematical Formulas, Mathematics Curriculum, Mathematics Instruction

Yeshurun, Shraga – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
The cognitive method, an algorithmic method for transforming verbal word problems into equations, equation systems, inequalities, etc., is presented and discussed. The psychological and mathematical aspects of the cognitive method are also reviewed. (MP)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Cognitive Processes, Educational Psychology, Learning Theories

Bryll, Grzegorz; Rabijewska, Barbara – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
The theory of unary and binary operations are discussed and illustrated with examples from school mathematics. Presentations of selected inverse operations are made and attention is drawn to certain "typical" problems that occur during instruction and learning of these concepts. (MP)

Gunzenhauser, R. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1975
In this paper, prepared for a European conference on mathematics education, the author examines three types of computer use in undergraduate and high school classrooms: Using the computer as an instructional tool for student development of algorithms, teaching about the computer itself, and use of computer-assisted instruction. (SD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, College Mathematics, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Science Education

Bishop, W. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1976
The merits of having students interact with the computer rather than use canned programs to solve problems are discussed. Examples are provided. (SD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, College Mathematics, Computer Oriented Programs, Higher Education
