Creating an Effective Fluorescence Microscopy Lesson as a Research Experience for a Science Educator-in-Training
Patricia Melloy; Alyssa Worbetz
Journal of Biological Education, v59 n1 p205-218 2025
We developed a fluorescence microscopy lesson geared towards high school students. Our goals included demonstrating how fluorescence microscopy works and illustrating the localisation of key cellular structures/organelles in the model organism, budding yeast. A trained student teacher/researcher on our team took the microscopy images and integrated them into a lesson on cellular structure and organelles following science educational guidelines. The project involved using yeast strains expressing fluorescent probes specific to structures such as the Golgi apparatus, mitotic spindle, nucleus, and mitochondria obtained from the Yeast Resource Center at the University of Washington. We presented the lesson to several groups of high school students in New Jersey, using a pre-test/post-test assessment. Our assessment results indicate that knowledge of microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, model organisms, biological scale and organelles increased after the lesson, along with interest in research, although attitudes towards science remained the same. This research experience provided a unique opportunity not only to train a student teacher in research techniques during their education, but also for a university professor and student teacher to work collaboratively to develop a lesson. We hope that future students participating in this lesson will also experience increases in knowledge and interest in science.
