Demir Kaya, Meva; Çok, Figen – International Journal of Psychology and Educational Studies, 2023
Identity, as important focus of psychosocial development, are closely related to self silencing and gender roles. Kurdek, Lawrence A.; Siesky, Albert E., Jr. – Journal of Divorce, 1980
In a study of single divorced custodial parents and their children, both custodial mothers and fathers evidenced high levels of androgyny. Both boys and girls were significantly more androgynous than a matched sample of children whose parents were not divorced. (Author/CC)
Descriptors: Androgyny, Children, Divorce, One Parent Family

Erdwins, Carol; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Investigated the relationship of sex role as measured by the Bem Sex Role Inventory to measures of self-concept and overt anxiety. Findings support the notion that it is the presence of masculine attributes rather than a balance of masculinity and femininity that is crucial to personal adjustment. (Author)
Descriptors: Anxiety, College Students, Females, Males
Wallace, Gaylen R.; Goodwin-Adam, Sharon – 1982
A review of the literature concerning the relationship between sex role and self measure identity includes a discussion of issues confronted in measurement. The methodology and analyses of data for the study are explained. The research was designed to determine which self referent measure most effectively discriminates among sex role identities.…

Moe, Cindy; And Others – Home Economics Research Journal, 1991
The Bem Sex Role Inventory was completed 3 times by 84 female home economists--to describe themselves, to describe home economists, and to describe home economists as an outsider would. They described themselves as masculine and a home economist as undifferentiated or mixed; they thought nonhome economists would describe home economists as…

Holleran, Paula; And Others – 1981
The relationships among self-reported social desirability, biological sex, and sex-role orientation are examined. The Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) consists of 60 personality characteristics divided equally into three subscales labeled Femininity (F), Masculinity (M), and Social Desirability (SD). One hundred and twenty-six undergraduates were…

Thomas, Susan – Journal of Educational Equity and Leadership, 1983
Examines measurement scales used in different studies of the relationship between masculinity, femininity, or androgyny, and self esteem. Suggests that findings of a high positive association between masculinity and self-esteem may be due to the fact that the most commonly used measurement scales do, in fact, endorse masculine characteristics.…

Gilbert, Lucia A.; And Others – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1981
Presents a reanalysis of earlier data from a study of self-perceptions of stereotypic masculine and feminine attributes, Rogerian-type conflict, and personal adjustment. Reanalyses demonstrated the advantage of distinguishing between androgynous and undifferentiated individuals rather than grouping them together into a single "balanced"…

Bem, Sandra Lipsitz – Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, 1983
Discusses the gender schema theory of sex typing, which proposes that sex typing derives largely from the child's readiness to encode and organize information according to the culture's definition of maleness and femaleness. Explores conditions that produce gender schematic processing and discusses strategies for raising gender aschematic…

Holleran, Paula R.; And Others – Counseling and Values, 1983
Investigated the multidimensionality of social desirability in a study of 126 students who completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory. The 20 social desirability items in the BSRI were factor analyzed. Results suggested that females do not see themselves as significantly more or less socially desirable than males. (JAC)

Wilson, F. Robert; Cook, Ellen Piel – Sex Roles, 1984
Compares concurrent validity of four sex-role instruments administered to a group of 281 urban university students. Reports that the instruments are sufficiently different in their measurement characteristics to warrant limiting generalizations about behavior based on these instruments to a particular instrument being used. (KH)
Descriptors: Androgyny, Personality Measures, Psychological Studies, Psychometrics
Belcher, Marcia J.; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1984
Compared the factor patterns underlying male (N=221) and female (N=420) self-reports on the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Results showed that when males and females were compared, only one of 10 factors reached the similarity criterion, suggesting that gender can be an important confounding variable in sex role research. (JAC)

Stockton, Nancy; And Others – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1980
Examined the relationship between sex role and nontraditional major choice. The sample included 693 students. Results indicate significant distributional patterns in sex-role and choice of major, which vary by sex. The factored scales from the Bem Sex-Role Inventory did demonstrate some power to discriminate students. (Author)

Baxter, Leslie A.; Shepard, Tara L. – Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 1978
In this study, sex role differences are assessed in terms of interpersonal conflict. Results suggest that feminine persons disapprove of competition more than persons of masculine and androgynous sex role identification. (Author/WI)
Descriptors: Androgyny, Assertiveness, Behavioral Science Research, Competition

Lubinski, David; Stokes, Joseph – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1983
Suggests a critical methodological flaw in a study done about the relationship between the Bem Sex-Role Inventory and certain indices of self-disclosure (Stokes, et al.). Notes that multiple regression analysis was not performed in appropriate hierarchical fashion. Includes Stokes reply to the critique. (PAS)
