Ludick, Pat – NAMTA Journal, 2014
A theory paper that gives a universal portrait of the "noble adolescent" directly quotes from Montessori. Pat Ludick defines the adolescent as they search for their future roles in a changing world, seek a happy life, form a compatible and collaborative personality, learn humility, and become aware of the head-heart duality. The…

Bengtsson, Hans; Söderström, Micael; Terjestam, Yvonne – Journal of Early Adolescence, 2016
Compassion may be directed at a broad range of targets. Dispositional…

Fregeau, Daniel L.; Barker, Maurice – Adolescence, 1986
The Objective Measure of Ego Identity was administered to 350 adolescents to test the Eriksonian theory of a developmental continuum from role diffusion to identity achievement. The results offer construct validity for the dynamic process proposed by Blos and Erikson, but do not support the categorization procedure as set forth by Adams, Shea, and…

Kronqvist, Eeva-Liisa – 1996
A central element in the socialization process of human beings is the development and transformation of personality. Two main theories contrast personality as an internal, subjective entity and as an entity that exists only in relation to others. This research project, adopting the second approach, investigated the formation of identity in young…

James, Michael A. – High School Journal, 1980
Presented are the theoretical characteristics of social identity in early adolescence (ages 10 to 15). It is suggested that no longer is identity thought to begin with adolescence, but may have its beginnings in the preteen years. The article draws heavily on Eriksonian concepts. (Editor/KC)

Wilkerson, Jackie; And Others – Adolescence, 1982
Investigated the relationship between ego identity and alienation in adolescents. Subjects (N=147) were administered the Adolescent Alienation Scale and Ego Identity Scale. Hayes, Richard L. – Adolescence, 1982
Argues for a view of adolescence as deriving from the nature of the interaction of adolescent thought and action in a social setting. Suggests the necessity for rethinking current definitions of adult as well as adolescent development and calls for a change in ways both groups are educated. (RC)

Hurtig, Anita Landau; Petersen, Anne C. – 1982
It has been predicted that, if an androgynous identity represents a higher level of psychosocial functioning, there should be a significant relationship between androgynous sex role identity and high self-esteem. To test this hypothesis, 139 male and female high school seniors completed the Sentence Completion Test of Ego Development, the Bem Sex…

Lewis, Susan K.; Mirowsky, John; Ross, Catherine E. – Social Forces, 1999
National Longitudinal Survey of Youth data indicate that sense of personal control increased from age 14 to 22. Dropping out of school hampered development; teen pregnancy did not.
