George, Linda K.; Siegler, Ilene C. – Educational Horizons, 1982
The authors describe (1) common stresses and problems of older adults; (2) coping strategies used; and (3) relationships among types of stresses, strategies, and perceptions of coping effectiveness. They found that allowing older persons to define stress in terms meaningful to them leads to greater understanding of life in old age. (SK)

Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Children, Locus of Control, Psychological Studies

Clark, Ruth Anne – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1976
This study examines the Rotter Internal-External locus of control Scale to determine if it differentiates people according to the degree of control they feel they have over behavior. The results support Rotter's claim that reinforcement value has to be taken into consideration in Locus of Control studies. (EJT)

Omizo, Michael M.; And Others – Journal of Humanistic Education and Development, 1984
Examined the effectiveness of group counseling, focusing on elimination of self defeating behaviors in 60 learning disabled children. Results of pre- and posttest measures indicated that compared to controls, children in the counseling group had higher aspirations, lower anxiety, and significantly higher internal locus of control scores. (JAC)

Steger, Joseph A.; And Others – Psychological Reports, 1973
The hypothesis of this study, that participants with some years of college would differ in their ability to predict their scores on a classroom examination, was supported by results indicating that internals are more accurate indicators of their non-academic performance than externals. (Author/KM)

Wiebe, Deborah J.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1994
Adolescents who were more internally focused were more able to discern which symptoms actually covaried with blood glucose (BG) fluctuations; those with higher trait anxiety tended to misattribute non-diabetes-related symptoms to BG levels. Interactions suggested those who both attend to internal physical sensations and experience-heightened…

Stephens, Mark W. – 1973
A discussion of parent behavior antecedents, cognitive correlates, and the multidimensionality of locus of control in young children includes reports of several different experiments. Results indicated that development of internal control expectancies is correlated with cognitive-intellectual development. Maternal behaviors were studied through a…

Masters, Mitchell M. – College Student Journal, 1979
Assesses the relative merit of three modes of instructor verbal behavior on student achievement. Results suggest that interacting with students outside the classroom using affective behaviors and locus of control change techniques improves student self-concept and classroom achievement. (Author)

Noland, Melody Powers; And Others – 1981
An attempt was made to determine what factors are important in a person's decision to engage in regular, vigorous activity. An Exercise Behavior Model was developed for the purpose of explaining exercise behavior. The model assumes that a person has four major predispositions or inclinations, which influence a readiness to exercise: (1) locus of…

Lee, Sang Min; Daniels, M. Harry; Kissinger, Daniel B. – Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples & Families, 2006
The study identified distinct patterns of parental practices that differentially influence adolescent behavior using the National Educational Longitudinal Survey (NELS:88) database. Following Brenner and Fox's research model (1999), the cluster analysis was used to classify the four types of parental practices. The clusters of parenting practices…

Kliewer, Wendy – Developmental Psychology, 1991
Studied the role of social conditions, Type A behavior, monitoring, blunting, and locus of control in second and fifth graders' methods of coping with everyday stressors. Except for Type A behavior, coping was associated with the predictors. Strongest associations were found for social competence. Predictors were not associated with ratings of…

Durante, Joan E. – Journal of Special Education, 1993
Five matched groups of 15 children (ages 8-13) were compared to determine whether behavioral subgroups of children with learning disabilities (LD) form different beliefs regarding causes of their achievement-related successes and failures. The achievement attributions of subjects were heterogeneous and related to presence and type of behavior…

Kocher, A. Thel – 1977
The purpose of this study is to determine whether locus of control scores for students in "open" programs changed significantly over a one-year period and whether there was any change different from change experienced by students in a "traditional" program. The lack of significant group main effects indicated that students in the open programs did…

Brunson, Bradford I. – 1980
Systematic investigations have verified the existence of a number of behavioral manifestations of the "Type A" behavior pattern. For example, brief exposure to salient uncontrollable stress has led to enhanced performance by Type A's on a subsequent task, whereas prolonged exposure has lead to performance deterioration. The ongoing experiences of…

Williams, Mary V.; Barber, William H. – B.C. Journal of Special Education, 1992
The question of whether special education students exhibit more learned helpless behavior and a more external locus of control than regular students is examined. The effects of these psychological conditions on school success are considered, and programs for alleviating learned helplessness and establishing a more internal locus of control are…
