Shisang Peng; Skyler T. Hawk – Journal of Adolescence, 2025
Introduction: Adolescents' information management behaviors involve calibrating interactions between the self and parents, which could serve as either risk or protective factors for self-esteem. Since a sense of control over life outcomes is a protective factor for overall well-being, it might account for links between youth information management…

Zhang, Junhua; Zhang, Yu; Xu, Fang – World Journal of Education, 2019
Compared with non-left-behind children, left-behind children in China have lower social adaptation and the underlying reasons deserve further study. This systematic review and meta-analysis included 29 studies published between 2006 and 2019. Protective factors of Left-behind children's social adaptation were resilience (r=0.574), self-efficacy…

Doren, Catherine; Grodsky, Eric – Sociology of Education, 2016
Parental income and wealth contribute to children's success but are at least partly endogenous to parents' cognitive and noncognitive skills. We estimate the degree to which mothers' skills measured in early adulthood confound the relationship between their economic resources and their children's postsecondary education outcomes. Analyses of…

You, Sukkyung; Sharkey, Jill – Educational Psychology, 2009
US schools fail to engage a significant proportion of adolescent students. Although student engagement is significantly related to academic achievement, there is a dearth of longitudinal research simultaneously examining the impact of personal and contextual factors on student engagement at both individual and school levels. Using a…

Maldonado-Molina, Mildred M.; Piquero, Alex R.; Jennings, Wesley G.; Bird, Hector; Canino, Glorisa – Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 2009
This study examined the trajectories of delinquency among Puerto Rican children and adolescents in two cultural contexts. Relying on data from the Boricua Youth Study, a longitudinal study of children and youth from Bronx, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, a group-based trajectory procedure estimated the number of delinquency trajectories,…

Gerdes, Alyson C.; Hoza, Betsy; Arnold, L. Eugene; Pelham, William E.; Swanson, James M.; Wigal, Timothy; Jensen, Peter S. – Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2007
Possible mediators of the relation between maternal depressive symptomatology and parenting behavior were examined for 96 children with ADHD and their mothers drawn from the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD (MTA) as part of an add-on investigation conducted by two of the six MTA sites. General cognitions (i.e., maternal locus of…

Hunter, Jeremy Paul – NAMTA Journal, 1999
Examined data on 4,000 adolescent students to explore self-esteem, locus of control, and family relationships. Schlansker, Jill Thrift; And Others – 1983
Reported in this paper are preliminary results from a study designed to examine the development of self-esteem and mastery of mothers with infants of very low birth weight (VLBW). Longfellow, Cynthia; Szpiro, Susan Zur – 1983
The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to determine whether a relationship exists between maternal depressive symptomatology and children's emotional well-being, and (2) to determine specifically whether it is the depressed mother's lack of supportiveness that affects her child's well-being. A total of 160 nonclinical population mother/child…

Falbo, Toni – 1980
The associations between growing up in a family disrupted by divorce and the interpersonal orientations of young adults were investigated in a survey of white college students (N=1720). The majority of subjects (89%) came from intact homes. Subjects from divorced families (N=106) had a more external locus of control and felt lonelier than those…

Belle, Deborah; Burr, Robin – Child Study Journal, 1991
Investigated the concerns that lead children to confide in others or refrain from doing so. Subjects were 8, 10, and 13 year olds. Results indicated that the children who more frequently confided in others and the children with more internal locus of control described more potential costs and benefits of confiding than did children who rarely…

Di Cindio, Linda A.; And Others – Adolescence, 1983
Examined the parent-peer orientation of 236 high school seniors. Results showed race was the strongest predictor of parent-peer orientation: Blacks tended to be more parent oriented. Respondents with high self-esteem were more parent oriented, while respondents who had an internal locus of control tended to be more peer oriented. (JAC)

Peiser, Nadine C.; Heaven, Patrick C. L. – Journal of Adolescence, 1996
Analyzes the effect of certain family processes on adolescents' self-reported delinquency and investigates whether self-esteem and locus of control mediate these effects. Results indicate that parental discipline style predicts self-reported delinquency. Also, a link between positive family relations and high self-esteem among males emerged. (RJM)
