Intimate self-disclosure to a stranger or an acquaintance was seen as less appropriate than nondisclosure. Disclosure to someone of a different age was seen as less appropriate than nondisclosure. Disclosure or nondisclosure to a person of the same age or to a friend was perceived as appropriate. (Author)

The effect of therapist self-disclosure on patients, under induced expectations that disclosure is appropriate, was studied. Results implied that for therapist disclosure to facilitate client openness, a therapist must emphasize disclosure as a part of the professional role and as appropriate for effective psychotherapy. It was predicted that attributions of mental illness would be based on the extent to which self-disclosure deviates from appropriate sex role behavior for men and women with self-disclosure perceived as appropriate for women and inappropriate for men.
