Revzin, I. I. – Linguistics, 1974
Synonyms are not in syntactic free-variation. Some text composition rules are examined and it is shown that they prevent the occurrence of paradoxical utterances which could arise if synonyms were freely substitutable. (Text is in German.) (TL)

Cheng, Robert L. – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1980
Divides Taiwanese modals into: (1) authority, where a deep structure agent exercises authority; (2) contigency, which concerns the speaker's judgment of the possibility or logical necessity df the occurrence of an event; and (3) volition, which expresses the subject's desires. The constructions in which these modals appear are examined. (PJM)

Ballweg, Joachim – Deutsche Sprache, 1974
Attempts to solve, by means of examples, some of the current problems in predicate raising (PR) in the theory of generative semantics. (Text is in German.) (DS)

Gonzalez-Mena de LoCoco, Veronica – Hispania, 1976
This article uses an animate/inanimate distinction in "se" constructions in Spanish to explain how to comprehend the messages conveyed by such constructions. Depending on the verb form, the emphasis may be on the event rather than the performer, or indicate that the speaker accepts no responsibility for the event. (CHK)

Chan, Stephen W. – Journal of Chinese Linguistics, 1974
Examines several subtypes of the verbal sequency NP-VP1-VP2 in Chinese, especially those involving descriptions of human action, directed motion, and instrumental functions, and finds that these could be subsumed under the heading of "purposive clauses." The VP1 states an action whose goal is fulfilled by the action performed in VP2. (Author/RM)

Nakau, Minoru – Papers in Japanese Linguistics, 1972
This paper explains some properties and restrictions involved in phenomena of topicalization in Japanese. The first section reviews certain properties involved in simplex topical sentences; the second section reveals certain constraints on topicalization involved in complex sentences. Section Three pursues one consequence suggested by those…

Bock, Kathryn – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
An investigation of the relationship between a speaker's decision to treat portions of the information in a sentence as given or new and the syntactic form of the sentence produced. A tendency of English speakers to use alternative surface structure rules to present given information before new information is demonstrated. (AMH)

Nakada, Seiichi – Journal of the Association of Teachers of Japanese, 1976
This paper formulates a semantic distinction between predicates in Japanese which take indirect questions and those which cannot, and advances a hypothesis that the former crucially involve in their semantics the absence, acquisition, presence, and loss of information relevant in certain ways. (Author)

Rugaleva, Anelja – Language Sciences, 1977
Nominalization of possessive sentences in Russian is discussed. It is maintained that all lexical surface items originate as terms in a situation model, and that their actualization as different parts of speech is language-specific. Language data are used to support a locative interpretation of the semantic model. (CHK)

Franco, Fabiola; Steinmetz, Donald – Hispania, 1986
Expands and develops the theory of "ser" and "estar" with predicate adjectives which was first presented in "Hispania" in May 1983. This theory holds that the selection of "ser" or "estar" in constructions with predicate adjectives expresses different types of implied comparisons. (SED)

Krzeszowski, Tomasz P. – Studia Anglica Posnaniensia, 1973
The necessity is asserted for constructing a theory of contrastive analysis which would incorporate both translation equivalence and "form and placement of the rules in grammar" as criteria for making decisions concerning comparability. (Available from: See FL 508 214). (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Contrastive Linguistics, Deep Structure, Generative Grammar, Language Universals

Azevedo, Milton M. – Linguistics, 1974
Sentences containing "estar" + participle are analyzed in order to highlight their semantic characteristics. (RM)
