Volunteer Evaluations of the Transitions Program for Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Evans, Lacey
ProQuest LLC, Ed.S. Dissertation, University of Nebraska at Omaha
This study examined the effects of participation of peer volunteers in the Transitions Program for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a program that facilitates social skills and social interactions. Participants in this study were peer volunteers in the Transitions Program. Each peer volunteer completed a questionnaire, following orientation, and a semi-structured interview at the end of the eight-month program. Responses regarding the effects of participating in the program were coded to analyze perceptions of the program and to evaluate change in the peer volunteer. As hypothesized, volunteers expressed positive change in themselves and suggested areas of the program that can be modified to better benefit the volunteers and the Transitions Program participants. This study will allow the directors of the program to modify the Transitions Program to maximize its benefits for not only the participants but for the volunteers as well.
