McKinnon, Richard; Osterhout, Lee – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
Focuses on the brain's response to one aspect of syntactic processing--the processing of sentences that violate constraints on constituent movement. Findings indicate that movement constraints can be applied during the earliest stages of sentence processing, perhaps in conjunction with the creation of phrase structure. (46 references) (Author/CK)

Vasta, Ross; Liebert, Robert M. – Developmental Psychology, 1973
Elementary school children were exposed to a series of modeled, tape-recorded sentences; those containing nongrammatical prepositional constructions were always vicariously rewarded, while the remaining, grammatically correct, background sentences were not. (Editor)

Cunningham, Donald J. – 1972
An experiment designed to test the generality of Paivio's two factor theory of meaning to sentence comprehension was carried out, and two scoring procedures were investigated: a verbatim score in which sentence elements had to be recalled exactly as they appeared in the original, and a substance score in which synonyms were accepted. The subjects…

Caplan, David; Walters, Gloria S. – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
The functional architecture of the verbal processing resource system was studied by testing aphasic patients in Canada and Boston for their abilities to use syntactic structure in sentence comprehension in isolation and under dual-task conditions. Results indicate that the processing resource system underlying syntactic processing is separate from…

Bloom, Ronald J.; And Others – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1996
Examines the use and understanding of concordant and discordant adverbial conjuncts in the latter part of the life span. Young, middle-aged, and elderly adults, matched for education level, were studied. Results indicate a significant decline in processing adverbial conjuncts in the elderly, due to a deficit in linguistic processing rather than a…

Ni, Weijia; And Others – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
Explores the prediction of the referential theory, which maintains that the relative complexity of discourse representations plays a key role in determining the perceiver's immediate parsing preferences. Results indicate that semantic/referential principles are applied immediately in an online ambiguity resolution and preempt general world…

Konieczny, Lars – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1997
Presents a fully incremental model that accounts for attachment preferences by the linear order of lexical heads in the surface structure and their thematic properties. Discusses the principle of "parameterised head attachment" and a serial variant on the basis of three online experiments on noun phrase and prepositional phrase…

Flynn, Suzanne – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1986
Fifty-one adult Spanish speakers at three levels of ESL ability were tested in both their elicited imitation (production) and act-out (comprehension) of complex sentences that were structurally identical. Analysis of variance results indicate that production tests, not comprehension tests, principally evaluate a learner's structural knowledge.…

Trahey, Martha – Second Language Research, 1996
Investigates the role of primary linguistic data in the acquisition of linguistic competence. The study examines the knowledge of adverb placement of francophone students learning English as a Second Language (ESL) one year after their exposure to a flood of data on adverb placement in English. Results indicate no change in the subjects'…

On-Line Sentence Interpretation in Spanish-English Bilinguals: What Does It Mean to Be "in Between"?

Hernandez, Arturo E; And Others – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1994
Investigates the real-time costs of sentence processing in early Spanish-English bilinguals. Bilinguals use an amalgam of monolingual strategies in choosing the agent of a sentence. The reaction time data reveal a larger language-specific component than the choice data. (37 references) (Author/CK)
