Gordon, Howard R. D.; Wyant, Laura J. – 1994
The purpose of this study was to describe the cognitive styles of both international and domestic graduate students attending Marshall University (West Virginia). A total of 41 American and international graduate students were administered the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), and 20 of the international students were interviewed. The study…

Terrell, Steven R. – 2002
This study investigated cognitive style as a screening mechanism for placing students in gifted education programs. Middle school (n=156) and high school students (n=94) were included in this study. Slightly fewer than half of the students had been previously identified as academically gifted, while the remainder were from the regular studies…

Flexer, B.K.; Roberge, J.J. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
A longitudinal study among American adolescents revealed (1) an insignificant impact of field dependence-independence on the development of formal operational thought; (2) continuous development of combinatorial reasoning and propositional logic abilities, but little increase in comprehension of proportionality; and (3) sex differences in formal…

Lusk, Edward J.; Wright, Haviland – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
The Group Embedded Figures Test was administered to 416 randomly selected college students in science, liberal arts, business, or mathematics classes. No sex differences in performance or improvement were found when differences in curriculum were taken into account. (SJL)

Thompson, Patricia; And Others – 1979
Using college freshmen enrolled in a learning analysis course, the relationship between five tests of cognitive style was investigated: (1) Group Embedded Figures Test; (2) Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Questionnaire; (3) Adult Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale; (4) Mehrabian Stimulus Screening Test; and (5) Kolb Learning Style…

Allen, Mary J.; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Adults took the Rod and Frame, Portable Rod and Frame, and Embedded Figures Tests. Absolute and algebraic frame-effect scores were more reliable and valid than rod-effect algebraic scores. Correlations with the Embedded Figures Test were so low that the interchangeability of these field articulation measures is questionable. (Author/RD)

Loo, Robert – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
The structure of the Group Embedded-Figures Test was examined. Data from 173 females and 93 males were subjected to Johnson's complete-linkage cluster analysis and principal components analysis. The results showed the importance of simple form type, especially Form E, the cube, and of item position. (Author/RD)

Mahlios, Marc C.; D'Angelo, Karen – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1983
Fifth-grade students (n=154) were given the Group Embedded Figures Test. Distribution characteristics and sex differences were examined. Earlier norms developed for adult samples are substantially different from those of a sample of children. The norms presented here provide a guide for identification of field dependence in children. (Author)

Rittschof, Kent A.; Griffin, Marlynn M.; Custer, Wendy L. – International Journal of Instructional Media, 1998
Describes a study that examined five influences on college students' schemata to determine what affected their ability to make effective use of instructional thematic maps. Topics include use of the Group Embedded Figures Test to determine field dependence/independence; sex differences; student preferences for data representation types; and…

Fritz, Robert L. – Marketing Educators' Journal, 1993
Completion of the Group Embedded Figures Test by 237 secondary marketing education students determined that most students, particularly females, had only low to moderate restructuring skills, needed for complex cognitive tasks; and most had career goals congruent with their attitudes and social skills but not their cognitive aptitude for…

Young, Johnny M. – 1984
Recent reports have shown that black high school and college students do not fare well on standardized tests, possibly because they have not been successful when dealing with materials requiring analytical thinking in the past. Several psychologists have found that mental imagery can be used to increase motivation to achieve idealized goals.…

Ogden, Darlene H. – 1993
Free verbal responses to pictures as an indication of cognitive style were studied for 199 college students, at Eastern Kentucky University. The Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) was administered following presentation of the pictures, a series of colored pictures of simple, medium and complex configuration. Responses given to three graduate…

Simpson, F. Morgan; And Others – 1994
The cognitive styles of Education majors at a southern university were examined over a 5-year period. The Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) was administered to 537 students in an introductory education course. This test identifies field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) learning styles. One hundred ninety-six students were retested at the…

Buckley, Setsuko – 1992
A study identified cognitive styles (as measured by field independence/dependence, FI/D) of 21 Japanese students in two American high schools, in comparison with 63 white-American students. It examined how cognitive styles may relate to academic achievement (as measured by grade point average (GPA) and test scores), gender, and number of years in…
