Cann, Arnie; Garnett, Alethea K. – Sex Roles, 1984
Female and male children, 67 to 114 months of age, rated perceived relative competence of male and female stimulus persons who were depicted as engaging in sex-stereotyped professions. Results suggest that sex-role stereotypes are transmitted to children quite early in life and with remarkable efficiency and significant impact. (Author/KH)

Bauer, Patricia J. – Child Development, 1993
Assessed 25-month-old girls' and boys' immediate and delayed recall of sequences depicting female-stereotyped, male-stereotyped, and gender-neutral activities. Girls showed equivalent recall of all sequence types. Boys showed better recall of male- than female-stereotyped sequences, and equivalent recall of male-stereotyped and gender-neutral…

Cappella, Roseann – 1980
Several key variables in the development and assessment of young children's sex role preference are examined in this study. Emmerich, Walter; Shepard, Karla – Sex Roles, 1984
Sex-typed preferences and gender constancy were assessed at ages four through eight years on a cross section of 819 urban children. Findings verified that sex-stereotyped preferences are highly developed among young children, and that, by age five, most children accurately attribute sex-stereotyped preferences to peers of the opposite sex.…

Leinbach, Mary Driver; And Others – Cognitive Development, 1997
Developed the Gender Stereotyping Test, a sorting task that identifies the type of information used by young children to assign objects or qualities to each sex.
