Studied the influence of counselor and client sex on relational communication patterns in counseling within a systems theory framework using audiotaped intake interviews of 36 counselors. Both counselor sex and and client sex were significant factors in participants' perceptions of each other during the intake. (JAC)

Examined type of situation and sex of the counselor in assertive training. Female subjects were given training in making complaints, small talk, and saying no to unreasonable requests. Significant improvement occurred. Subjects seen by a male counselor changed significantly more than subjects seen by a female counselor. (Author)

Male and female counselors (N=88) viewed videotaped vignettes of two 35-year old women and two 20-year old women who portrayed problems about feared rape, existential anxiety, and choice of college major. Results indicated the two personal-social problems were rated as more serious than vocational problems on all dependent measures. (Author)

Investigates effects of sex of judge, sex of referent, and sex-pairing of judge and referent on level of understanding, or affective sensitivity, of school counselors. Male and female counselors were found to be equally accurate in their empathic judgments. There were no detected effects of sex-pairing. (Author)

Anticipated counseling behaviors of college students and their preferences for counselors of both sexes and four different age groups were explored in a hypothetical counselor study.
