Barnet, Helen Smith – 1987
This study depicts the divorce process over three time periods: predivorce decision phase, divorce proper, and postdivorce. Research has suggested that persons with a more internal locus of control experience less intense and shorter intervals of stress during the divorce proper and better postdivorce adjustment than do persons with a more…

Gender-Specific Relationships between Trust-Suspicion, Locus of Control, and Psychological Distress.

Heretick, Donna M. L. – Journal of Psychology, 1981
Forty-two male and 84 female undergraduate students completed measures for locus of control (Rotters I-E Locus of Control Scale), psychological stress (Emotionality Scale of the Pittsburgh Scales), and trust-suspicion. Results are discussed in terms of gender differences in response. (CM)

Nowicki, Stephen, Jr. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Ascertained whether high levels of stress at different periods of development were related to an external locus of control. Externals and internals completed the Life Events Scale. Data indicated that stress, for females in preschool and pubescent years and males in elementary and pubescent years, is related to externality. (Author/BEF)

Halpin, Glennelle; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1985
Multivariate and bivariate analyses of teachers' responses showed that locus of control was related to teacher stress. As hypothesized, teachers who felt they were in control reported less stress in job related situations than did those who did not feel influential in their educational environment. (Author/DWH)

Farkas, James P. – Administrator's Notebook, 1982
Analyzing school principals' perception of job stress and factors that have been assumed to influence stress, this study found that principals perceive lower stress than popular literature has indicated. Female principals perceive even less stress than male principals. (MD)

Registered nurses, interns, and residents from five hospitals in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey were administered the Maslach Human Services Survey, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, Rotter's Locus of Control Scale, Newman's Alpha Omega Scale, and a demographic questionnaire. Results strongly suggested that an individual with high self-esteem and…

Siddique, C. M.; D'Arcy, Carl – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1984
This study examined the relationship between perceived stress in family, school, and peer-group situations and four measures of psychological well-being. The sample of Canadian adolescents was studied to determine the mental health consequences of stress and the moderator effects of locus of control orientation on stress-outcome relationships.…

Bowker, Anne; Bukowski, William M.; Hymel, Shelley; Sippola, Lorrie K. – Journal of Research on Adolescence, 2000
Examined impact of peer experience on seventh graders' strategies for coping with peer hassles. Found that more aggressive adolescents perceived more control over hassles. More aggressive, unpopular adolescents used more negative strategies; more popular aggressive females used more problem-focused strategies. Withdrawn adolescents perceived less…

Farkas, James – 1983
Numerous studies indicate that an individual's perception of internal or external control over life events ("perceived locus of control") is a personality variable that influences the perception of a situation as threatening or stress-inducing. Whether for reasons of personality or because of "situational powerlessness," the…

Weist, Mark D.; And Others – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1995
The influence of stress as mediated or moderated by locus of control, family environment, social support, and coping style on psychological adjustment and school performance was studied for 164 urban ninth graders. External locus of control increased vulnerability for both sexes, but gender differences in other protective functions are discussed.…

Finch, Michael D.; And Others – American Sociological Review, 1991
Longitudinal data in St. Paul (Minnesota) for 1,001 ninth graders and 962 of them as tenth graders show that part-time work experience and mastery orientation are reciprocally related for adolescents. Youth more internally oriented in grade 9 had less stressful jobs in grade 10. Extrinsic work conditions are sources of control orientation. (SLD)
