Thomas, Susan – Journal of Educational Equity and Leadership, 1983
Examines measurement scales used in different studies of the relationship between masculinity, femininity, or androgyny, and self esteem. Suggests that findings of a high positive association between masculinity and self-esteem may be due to the fact that the most commonly used measurement scales do, in fact, endorse masculine characteristics.…

O'Neil, James M.; And Others – Sex Roles, 1986
Two measures of gender role conflict with acceptable test-retest and internal consistency reliabilities and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire were administered to 527 male college students. Spence, Janet T.; Helmreich, Robert L. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1980
The Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ) largely measure socially desirable instrumental (masculine) and expressive (feminine) traits which have limited relationships with sex role attitudes and behaviors. The literature does suggest that the traits have important implications separate from sex role behaviors.…

Ozer, Daniel – 1981
The rich complexity of the concepts of masculinity and femininity has been reflected in personality measures in at least two different ways: by employing a variety of subscales with comparatively homogeneous items or by using a single scale with comparatively heterogeneous items.
