Translating Veditz
Padden, Carol
Sign Language Studies, v4 n3 p244-260 Spr 2004
George Veditz's "The Preservation of the Sign Language" was a popular film about the deaf language. Sixty five years later, in 1977, Veditz's film was retrieved and screened at the opening of a conference on the research and teaching of American Sign Language. Despite the age and the condition of the film, the screening held the audience spellbound as Veditz's lecture in the film rang clear and true for a generation many years removed from the events he described in his film. After the film was made in 1913, Veditz wrote a letter to Roy Stewart two years later stating his satisfaction over his film. Included with the letter was Veditz's written version of the lecture. In this article, the authors observe how the translation contains a few signs of signed segments that do not appear in Veditz's English version. The authors also observe that Veditz seems to have added entire sentences to his written address that do not appear in his signed lecture, maybe because he could not resist adding still more fire to his message. The author also describes how Veditz fought to stop the legislation of oralism, a practice in which deaf individuals were taught to communicate in the spoken language. (Contains 2 notes.)
