Rheinheimer, David C.; Penfield, Douglas A. – 1998
The performance of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and six selected competitors was examined under varying experimental conditions through Monte Carlo simulations. The six alternatives were: (1) Quade's procedure (D. Quade, 1967); (2) Puri and Sen's solution (M. Puri and P. Sen, 1969); (3) Burnett and Barr's rank difference scores (T. Burnett and…

Rheinheimer, David C.; Penfield, Douglas A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2001
Studied, through Monte Carlo simulation, the conditions for which analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) does not maintain adequate Type I error rates and power and evaluated some alternative tests. Discusses differences in ANCOVA robustness for balanced and unbalanced designs. (SLD)

Klockars, Alan J.; Beretvas, S. Natasha – Journal of Experimental Education, 2001
Compared the Type I error rate and the power to detect differences in slopes and additive treatment effects of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and randomized block designs through a Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the more powerful option in almost all simulations for tests of both slope and means was ANCOVA. (SLD)

Fouladi, Rachel T. – Structural Equation Modeling, 2000
Provides an overview of standard and modified normal theory and asymptotically distribution-free covariance and correlation structure analysis techniques and details Monte Carlo simulation results on Type I and Type II error control. Demonstrates through the simulation that robustness and nonrobustness of structure analysis techniques vary as a…

Johnson, Colleen Cook; Rakow, Ernest A. – 1994
This research explored the degree to which group sizes can differ before the robustness of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) are jeopardized. Monte Carlo methodology was used, allowing for the experimental investigation of potential threats to robustness under conditions common to researchers in education. The…

Beasley, T. Mark; Sheehan, Janet K. – 1994
C. L. Olson (1976, 1979) suggests the Pillai-Bartlett trace (V) as an omnibus multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test statistic for its superior robustness to heterogeneous variances. J. Stevens (1979, 1980) contends that the robustness of V, Wilk's lambda (W) and the Hotelling-Lawley trace (T) are similar, and that their power functions…

McKenzie, Craig R. M. – Cognitive Psychology, 1994
Through Monte Carlo simulation, respective normative and intuitive strategies for covariation assessment and Bayesian inference are compared. Results indicate that better performance in both tasks results from considering alternative hypotheses, although not necessarily using a normative strategy. Conditions under which intuitive strategies may be…

Baldwin, Lee; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1984
Within-class regression is a method, developed in this paper, of comparing a large number of nonequivalent groups. This study indicated that within-class regression was a less biased method of data analysis and will yield more accurate estimates of treatment effects than analysis of covariance. (PN)
