Situation Awareness Assessed through High-Fidelity Simulation in Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Applicant Program Admission
Christopher Giberson
ProQuest LLC, N.P. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Nurse anesthesia is a highly challenging and respected advanced practice specialty. With the respect comes a rigorous educational process that is commenced with admission into a graduate nurse anesthesia program. Faculty face the difficult task of selecting candidates that demonstrate promise in successful progression through the graduate nurse anesthesia program and subsequently becoming a safe and effective practitioner. Researchers have studied use of the cognitive measures for admission criteria, yet few have addressed using non-cognitive attributes of the nurse anesthesia applicant for admission. The purpose of the quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationships between situation awareness scores assessed using high-fidelity simulation and UGPA, and situation awareness scores assessed using high-fidelity simulation and acceptance into a graduate nurse anesthesia program in nurse anesthesia applicants at two different graduate nurse anesthesia programs located within the United States. The sample included applicants to graduate nurse anesthesia programs. Data collection occurred the day of the interview at the graduate nurse anesthesia program using a data collection sheet as well as a high-fidelity simulator. Correlations were conducted using Pearson's r and point biserial statistics. The conducted research did not find any correlation between undergraduate grade point average and situation awareness scores assessed through high-fidelity simulation. The research also did not find any correlation between situation awareness scores assessed through high-fidelity simulation and acceptance into a graduate nurse anesthesia program. Recommendations for the further research include conducting this research at a single institution to see if the results are reproducible.
