Evaluating the Effectiveness of Remote Behavior Skills Training to Teach Correct Face Mask Wearing to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
Tanya Marie Hough
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Currently, there is limited research examining the effectiveness of behavior analytic techniques with adults with disabilities, who often struggle with generalizing socially significant skills to real life situations in the community. Further, little research has examined the remote delivery of behavior analytic techniques, which has become a pressing need in light of the recent pandemic. Behavior skills training (BST) is a behavior-analytic procedure that is used to teach novel skills. The present study evaluated the effects of behavior skills training delivered remotely to teach correct wearing of a face mask to adults with developmental disabilities. The results of the study are based on hypothetical data and demonstrated overall effectiveness of behavior skills training and improvements in the participants' performance of correctly wearing a face mask. While remotely delivered BST was found to produce improvements in mask wearing by all four participants, performance was inconsistent across participants. Limitations of the current procedure, along with directions for future research, are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
