Twenty-eight mentally retarded adults received behavioral training in assertiveness. Analysis of videotaped role play responses indicated significant improvement in polite refusal of unreasonable requests as well as evidence of generalization and maintenance of assertive refusal skills. The social impact of assertive versus nonassertive behavior in fourth- and fifth-grade boys was investigated. Subjects viewed and evaluated eight videotaped scenes of different ten-year-old male models responding assertively or nonassertively to given situations.
