White Christian Nationalism: Adult Education and Threats to Democracy
Ralf St. Clair1; Lyn Tett2; Rob Black1
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n186 p28-34 2025
Adult education has a historical and ongoing commitment to fostering democratic relationships, demonstrated by the tendency of adult education to be called upon when social change and realignment are most desirable. This article considers the philosophical and pragmatic possibilities for adult education at this moment, when White Christian nationalism, based upon a particular reading of politics and religion, is being used to promote a specific form of authoritarianism. The article presents two concrete examples to support a social capital-based view that adult educators are central in working to shed light on these forces and support citizens to develop an informed, more democratic alternative.
