Jamaica High School Computer-Assisted Bilingual/Bicultural Multi-Skills Project, 1985-1986. OEA Evaluation Report.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn. Office of Educational Assessment.
Jamaica (New York) High School's Computer-Assisted Bilingual/Bicultural Multi-Skills Project offers Haitian Creole/French-speaking and Spanish-speaking students a wide range of academic and vocationally related subjects in computerized and non-computerized instructional packages. Special emphasis is on achieving a measurable improvement in students' English as a second language (ESL) skills and a minimum passing grade in Spanish or Haitian Creole/French for 75 percent of the program's native speakers. The goal of the program is to help these students participate satisfactorily in the school's mainstream program and then go on to college or trade school or directly into the job market. Career planning activities and tutoring were included in the project. This report describes the program, personnel, and students; discusses evaluation findings; and offers conclusions and recommendations. Analysis of student achievement data indicate the following: (1) the program objective in English language development was surpassed; (2) the native language passing rate objective was surpassed; (3) program students achieved the same passing rate in content-area subjects as did mainstream students; and (4) program students met the proposed objective in the area of attendance but not in the area of suspension.
