Geuss, Michael N.; Stefanucci, Jeanine K.; Creem-Regehr, Sarah H.; Thompson, William B. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2012
Three experiments examined perceived absolute distance in a head-mounted display virtual environment (HMD-VE) and a matched real-world environment, as a function of the type and orientation of the distance viewed. In Experiment 1, participants turned and walked, without vision, a distance to match the viewed interval for both egocentric…

Granrud, Carl E.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
Compares monocular depth perception with binocular depth perception in five- to seven-month-old infants. Reaching preferences (dependent measure) observed in the monocular condition indicated sensitivity to monocular depth information. Binocular viewing resulted in a far more consistent tendency to reach for the nearer object. (Author)

O'Donnell, L. M.; Smith, A. J. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1994
This article describes the physiological mechanisms involved in three-dimensional depth perception and presents a variety of distance and depth cues and strategies for detecting and estimating curbs and steps for individuals with impaired vision. (Author/DB)

Livingstone, Margaret; Hubel, David – Science, 1988
Summarizes the anatomical, physiological, and psychological evidence related to the primate visual system. States that comparison of perceptual abilities with the electrophysiological properties of neurons may help deduce functions of visual areas. (RT)
